Did you know one of your ancestors was born free in the U.S.? Did you know that every ship traveling from the U.S. to Liberia had a name?  These are just glimpses of the rich history being uncovered. Full stories will be shared at the 2025 Dunbar Family Reunion—and made available right here on the website by October 2025.

Our History

This page is dedicated to preserving and sharing the genealogical and historical legacy of George Augustus Dunbar Sr. and his wife Jerusha Burns, through whom the Dunbar family line was born.

Jerusha was the daughter of  Francis Burns (Pictured Above) and Amelia Dellanot, making them an essential part of our family’s roots and story. Through their union, and the marriage of Jerusha and George Sr., a legacy of strength, resilience, and family was set in motion—one that continues to grow across generations.

In this first phase of collecting and preserving our history, much of the focus has gone into preparing materials for the 2025 Dunbar Family Reunion. This includes gathering stories, documents, and photos for display during the event.

Following the reunion, we will begin the next phase: organizing this rich collection for the website in a way that is accessible, engaging, and easy to navigate. This will involve establishing a structure with categories, headings, and subpages so family members can explore our history meaningfully.

What's Coming Next?

How You Can Help?

To make this next phase possible, we’ll need help from across the family. Whether you’d like to join the:

  • Communications Team – assisting with website layout, technical updates, and user-friendly navigation

  • History Team – helping gather, digitize, and catalog historical materials

  • Outreach Team – conducting interviews and capturing oral history

  • Contribute in other ways such as writing, organizing photos, or designing systems for ongoing updates—there’s a place for you!

While the reunion has served as a springboard for launching this initiative, our efforts to preserve and celebrate the Dunbar legacy will not be limited to every two years. We’re building a rhythm of monthly and quarterly virtual gatherings where we can continue this work, deepen our connections, and ensure that the stories of our ancestors live on—through us.

We invite you to take part in this living legacy. If you have family stories, photos, documents, or are interested in helping in any capacity, please contact us at: 4dunbarfamilyreunion@gmail.com
